If you have not yet tried EMDR, you are in for a treat! This remains an all time favorite technique and truly feels like magic the way it tunes you in to exactly what the origins of issues are. This technique stems from tapping into your body’s dream tool for healing. We all move our eyes back and forth each night during REM sleep while we dream. (Yes, you dream even if you don’t remember!) Why do we dream? It is because our body is doing exposure therapy on us at night. It uses this tool to heal us while we sleep. Information that comes from EMDR often feels spiritual or inspired. It works by targeting the body and mind simultaneously. The result is faster and more powerful healing than regular talk therapy. This amazing tool reworks and reprocessing stuck memories quickly so that your symptoms of anxiety and heaviness can be relieved.
The idea behind this technique is that energy can get trapped in your body creating symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and addictive urges. It works much like acupuncture in that it stimulates different points on the body to release or move energy. The good news is, no needles are involved and people usually experience relief within just a few minutes. If you think about how we instinctively wring our hands or rub our fingers when stressed, you will see that many of the points that are targeted with this treatment are points we subconsciously stimulate on our own. Doing it intentionally enhances the result. Another good thing about this tool is that it can be used on many topics and can be used at home.
This is similar to EFT/TFT but involves stimulating only one hold on the body while focusing on the distressing symptom or issue. A series of statements are spoken to help target and access the identified problem. This is a gentle yet powerful way to move stagnant energy from the mind and body.
If you take a moment right now to tune in to the thing that is bothering you, you are likely to notice a feeling in your body. Maybe a tight feeling in your chest or a heavy feeling in the pit of your stomach? Somatic Experiencing helps translate those bodily sensations into words and action so that you can stop re-experiencing them as physical sensations. This is done in a slow and deliberate way in connection with your therapist so you do not feel overwhelmed.
Using Applied Kinesiology or muscle testing makes it possible to bypass the conscious mind and access your deepest wisdom for yes or no responses. It works by gauging the reaction of a muscle after posing a question. This technique is used by clinicians on their own to help guide the sessions but is also something that can be taught to clients for use outside of session. It helps strengthen trust in one’s ability to make decisions. A pendulum can be used instead of muscle testing. Much more about this topic is readily available online.
